Quick question for the self employed.  I heard a rumour that once you start filling in a self assessment tax return you will need to one every year, even if you are no longer self employed.  Is this true?

I had to do one for a couple of years (actually may only have been the year after) even after I stopped being self employed, think I had to make a declaration or something to stop having to do it.

You'll only need to complete one up until the point you stop being self employed. If it's mid year you'll  have to include any employed pay on the form as well. You must let HMRC know, so they update their records or they'll keep chasing you.

It took the simpletons three years to take me off the system, the last two years of which I wasn't even in the country and they tried to fine me.  The last time I rang them there was an option for 'if you've received a threatening letter but aren't actually self-employed anymore', or something like that, so I guess the amount of people it was happening to had got out of control and they finally did something about it.  Didn't hear from them last year so I'm guessing they've sorted the problem.
