Working fine last night, put on this morning and sound is ok so getting a signal but no picture - just a black screen!!  Any ideas or help gladly received, it is on a sky dish and Toshiba manunfacture.  Purchased from Comet about six years ago.  Anybody got a name/phone for a reasonable engineer in the Swindon area?

Have you turned it off and on again?

Seriously though, I have a toshiba TV. It is 5 years old so way out warranty. I contacted Toshiba, as it had a faulty on/off button and they fixed it Free of Charge. Brilliant customer service. Worth contacting them on the off chance.

Have you tried re-tuning it?

Is the screen totally dead, or does it come on but stay black (if you see what I mean)? I guess if its totally dead then not much to be done...

Sorry if the following is a bit simplistic:

"On a sky dish" - so do you have a separate Sky box, or does this TV have built in Freesat?

If a sky box some simple things:
   - Power off the Sky Box (unplug)
   - Power off TV (unplug)
   - Plug both back in

If it is a separate box, how is it connected ? Scart, HDMI, something else?
   - Check physical connection between Sky box and TV
   - Check nobody has accidentally changed the TV "source", e.g. RGB->svideo

Or check another source (DVD player, TV tuner even if its just static, etc)

When I switch on there is a faint miniscule flash and then nothing, sound is fine.  Runs through a sky box.  Put a dvd on, got sound, no picture!!  Not looking good!!

Surely when you use the remote, say to change channel or the volume, then something should come up on the screen?

If it doesn't the problem must be with the TV. If it does then probably with the signal going in.

If there was a problem with the signal I would have assumed I would get nothing, but the sound is perfect and I can change channels and still get only sound!!

Does the tv backlight still work? Clearly a picture issue in one way or another with the tv itself. A case of getting it fixed or replacing it. There are ways around this problem through house insurance if you have accident cover and someone knocks the tv over Wink

That's why I always go to Burdens. Pay a little extra maybe but their service is second to none no matter how old the appliance is. Give 'em a call.

Fair play FB.  We always used Hickmans and received excellent service, don't know why we went to Comet for the last one, but just found the paperwork out and it is nine years old!!  I think going down the new route is ther way to go now!!  Thanks guys for your suggestions.

What about the tv remote? Jonny's right, the volume meter would be on screen if the screen worked.

Anyway, sounds like it's broked.

Not necessarily. On some connectors the sound is carried over a separate wire from the picture, so a bad cable could cause it. But again, are any TV control displays showing up or not? If they're not the TV is fucked, if they are the signal is fucked.
