Williams inspired by MacDonald belief

ANDY Williams believes the belief new boss Kevin MacDonald instilled in his players at half-time played a major part in Swindon’s dramatic 2-1 win at Coventry.

It’s a slow learning process at the moment because we have only known him for a couple of days, and it was a lot different at half-time,” he said.

“If we were going in 1-0 down in that situation previously it would have been a very different half-time team-talk, and he was very positive indeed and he has given us a lot of belief in ourselves again and has got us passing the ball"

You can imagine PDC in this scenario ranting and raving etc. He also probably would have taken Nathan Thompson off after 5 minutes and banished him to training with the youths for having the temerity to make a mistake.

Just wait until the Pdc fan club reads this ...

Good to see us passing the ball again, seems to have completely gone from our game in recent weeks.

It doesn't need a degree in psychology really does it..... My guess is players are being encouraged to be circumspect in what they say, but I don't think it will be long before we hear a bit more from the dressing room.  As one who enjoyed the moment but also knew a bit about the damage going on, I was very supportive of the installation of discipline and managerial authority over player power, but you get nowhere long-term by making fear your foundation.

I don't think Ferguson's approach is anywhere near the same as PDC's.

PDC's worked, provided the turnover of players was maintained (I'm not saying it had to cost a fortune, you just will struggle to get buy in for long enough - see Caddis, maybe McCormack).  If we were going to allow that to continue I think he'd have continued to bring success.  Oh, and I have very little sympathy for the players being told to work hard, train so much etc.  It's not the only way, but it was delivering results.

Equally, a softer approach can work, provided the players are individually inspired enough to want to give their all to that person.  So, no reason that someone else can't maintain or even kick on from what PDC left behind (with tyres screaching it seems).

I was referring to 'the installation of discipline and managerial authority over player power', part of the post. I think that pretty much captures Ferguson's approach for much of his managerial career.

I am no Man U fan, or even much of a Fergie fan, but to compare PDC to him is a bit premature.  I'm sure fear has a part to play in the way he exerts his authority, but after his experience in the game and his success I guess there isn't a person in football who is not at least in awe of him.  Whatever the positives in PDCs tenure here, he has a long way to go before he can be spoken of in the same breath as AF.

It will be interesting to see if the players are still keen to follow the PDC ethos of fitness and training where he had them in everyday sometimes doing double sessions, will they be keen to want to continue this under McDonald knowing that part of that with the fitness is what enables them to keep going at the end of games when other teams are starting to tire

One big difference between Fergie and PDC is respect.

Fergie has earned the respect of his players and he respects them in turn. PDC thinks respect is a one way street and simply means treating him like a god.

Sure Fergie has bust ups with players but I don't remember many that were in public and resulted in the player never playing again. PDC did this more in 18 months that Fergie has in the last 18 years.

PDC will never even be a tenth of the manager Fergie is.
