Imagine 50 years worth of interest. We probably owe Westbury United £700million

Outstanding debts held since 1957 is surely a reason so ridiculous for being under a transfer embargo in 2013 that they couldn't make it up? Or is that the clever part of an elaborate double-bluff?
1957!!!

Wouldnt the time value of money intimate that any money we owed back then would be nigh on worthless about now?

The life of a town fan. Swinging from elation to despair to bafflement to confusion to cynicism so very quickly. I hate to support a normal club rather than the dysfunctional knockabout club that is us.

TRANSFERS IN
DATE PLAYER SIGNED FROM / TRANSFER DETAIL JUL 1956 Gerry DEAR (signed professional contract) 1956 Keith MORGAN Westbury United (signed as amateur) 1 SEP 1956 Duncan CAMERON (signed professional contract) OCT 1956 Vince JACK Bury NOV 1956 Arnold DARCY Wigan Athletic £1,500 (initial fee of £1,000 - £750 paid immediately, £250 in the next month, and further £500 after 12 appearances.) NOV 1956 Stan EARL Orient NOV 1956 Jimmy LEE Orient JAN 1957 Jack FOUNTAIN Sheffield United APR 1957 Frank O'MAHONEY (signed professional contract) MAY 1957 Bill ROOST Bristol Rovers £2,000 JUN 1957 Peter CHAMBERLAIN Leicester City JUN 1957 Lewis CLAYTON Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic 1957 Ernie HUNT (signed as amateur)
Well Jack Fountain was banged up for 15 months for his part in the infamous Jimmy Gauld, Bronco Layne, Peter Swann match fixing scandal....so maybe we never paid his bonuses of 3/6 pence halfpenny.

I thought a debit was not enforceable after 6 years.
Only if you go 6 years without acknowledging the debt in any way, if you acknowledge it the clock resets. That applies for individuals, not sure about companies. With regard to the debt from 1957, if you add on interest and late payment surcharges a £500 debt would now be £1m. Probably.

If anyone at the Adver still has Paolo Di Canio's number could they ask him to comment on whether there is any truth in the "legal action from former employees" part of the tale. If not, can the chap at the BBC who used to work for BBC Wilts and ghosts his column do it?
Personally I don't swallow that line any more than I do the rest, unless they still haven't paid Piccareta and friends.

We'll probably find our we should have been under umbongo since 1957 and will be relegated one division for each signing we've made since then.

Really? We're supposed to believe that a debt from 1957 is causing a transfer embargo? Behave.

Can someone compound value £500 over 56yrs (at say 4%) for the Wigan lad? A £10k debt over that period in compound interest at 3% would be about £50k now I recon. Can't see any debt from back then being more than £10k to £20k max. And surely if we entered into admin in the 80's this debt would have been written off with the other debt, even if it was not allowed for at the time?
