THE SAM MORSHEAD COLUMN: There's no need to panic

IN THESE situations, it’s good to take time and read everything through, listen to every last word and consider all you’ve heard.

Contrition is a wonderful expression don't you think. Sam if you don't want to fill in the holes you dig, don't dig them in the first place.....

This is turning into one of those self-perpetuating news stories that are unfortunately all to common in the modern, Murdoch system of news reporting.

1. Person makes statement in media
2. Media warps the statement, adds a terrifying headline, then runs it as fact
3. People panic/get outraged/gibber/make knee-jerk reactions
4. Media relays as much woe as possible about how panicky/knee-jerk people are getting, and how worrying the situation is.
5. Media then talks about how there's nothing really to worry about, and that people who made knee-jerk decisions were being a bit daft. And where idd this story come from anyway? Let's find a culprit!
6. Original person who made the statement is treated as if they're guilty of a heinous crime by the media.
7. 'New Leads' cause everything to be tied in with some kind of Establishment figure in some way.
8. Media persues the Establishment figure until they resign through stress or because their house is getting letterbombed.
9. Joe public gets bored, there's some kind of enquiry with big words about 'HOW did this happen?'
10. Media runs with that story for a bit, but it gets boring, or they are accused of inciting it, so they find someone else to interview and begin the cycle again.

I just wish that decent news outlets would stop trying to compete with Sky and the Sun and the Mail etc. If the BBC just kept up a consistently good standard of news reporting without feeling the need to compete with the guff coming out of the Murdoch stable we'd all be a lot better off. It'd be cheaper too.

Oh, yeah, Sam Morsehead's a cunt. I think that was my original message, but it got lost somewhere along the way...
