I think you're right, though I was hoping there would be some obscure company that would do it for a grand  Smiley

The excesses are £500 to £750, if he makes a claim he'll basically be a couple of grand down I.e. Loss of original car, excess, new car.

Still can't get a quote for less than £1600 for a one litre corsa  Sad

In fact the prices vary daily when I put the info into a comparison site, quite dramatically.

Never use price comparison sites. They never work out cheaper than ringing companies direct. Brokers are much better.

Ah, good point. I'll give the brokers a try this weekend. I haven't used one in years because my own insurance is cheap.

A lot of different things you can do to get the price down too. Low limited mileage policies for example, or make him take pass plus if it will knock a lot off the price.

He'll be starting a job soon that will bump his mileage up for the commute, I'll have a look at this pass plus thing.

When I entered that I had pass plus to see how much cheaper it would be, the premium actually went up.

Have you tried Direct Line? I insured my 1.4 litre Corsa for less than a grand with them, although I was 19 at the time so that may have made a difference, worth a try if you haven't already though, see what quote you get online, then ring them up and asked what you can do to make it cheaper, they usually knock a bit off every year when I give them a call.

Always made it cheaper for me with Direct Line, although up until this time last year I was paying £1k for an A3 so the Corsa quote doesn't sound too bad

That's not how an excess works...  Huh?

Unless you are referring to the fact they always under-value your total loss.

It's all done on risk. Obviously the higher value car then the insurance will be more, but its has many factors like age, how long you've owned the car, how long your driving and even your occupation can have an effect on the price.

Not for me. For a >£1000 car the insurance was always £2000+ and for my brand new Punto it was £850.

Most of the cost of insurance for a young driver will be for third party cover (ie the cost of the claim of the person you hit).

That is why Third Party only insurance is equally as (and sometimes more) expensive than fully comp.

Just got a quote for our 17 year old Son of £750 from the meerkat, although to be fair he hasn't passed his test yet, obviously it will go up a fair bit once he passes his test.

Got a good quote from one of the "black box" companies. He has passed his test and is raring to go. If we get him insured tonight online does he have to wait for the box to be fitted? Couldn't see that on the website (though I'm sure it must be there)
