Town well placed for playoff push?

Been a funny old season so far, my over-riding feeling is that we've been far from our best for long periods... but here we are, 5 points from top, with top to play on Friday night. If we can get it right at home and up front, we can win the League. It's going to click soon - I know it!

If we can kick on from here, and gain a little consistency, we'll be on course for play-offs. I imagine one or two teams will really kick on at some point - let's hope we're one of them again!

Ironically due mainly to the work of our defence our goal average is very healthy and could be worth an extra point come the seasons end.

All three points Fri would set us up nicely, just noticed that the current playoff position teams are either playing each other or a top ten team so all sides at the top end will be dropping points this weekend. Brentford v Stevenage. Crawley v Sheff U. Doncaster v Plastics. That's if this relentless rain allows games to be played

Play-offs my arse, if we can kick on over Christmas we can position ourselves well for a top two spot.

If we win tomorrow, and it includes both Williams and Collins getting a goal, we will be well placed for a push for the top two. If the boys start scoring in front of home crowds, and feel the pride and resurgence in confidence that'll give them, then there is absoloutely NO reason we shouldn't be in the top two come Feburary.

Family home's pretty close to Yeovil, so when we signed Williams (this was covered on here too) a load of their fans told me he's a good player, who works hard who just can't finish for some reason. Seeing what Di Canio's done to De Vita (who was woeful at times last season- and that's someone who always thought he had talent saying that), I see no reason why Williams can't do the same. He needs a little bit of luck and a little bit of confidence and he could be a truly great Striker. Having Miles back to fitness will be a good spur for him too- I'm not one of the "PLAY MILES HE DUN SKORED FUR US 'GAINST VILLA" crowd, I just think having a youngster who can finish better than he can atm will be a nice kick in the arse for him. And Miles would be a reasonably good asset to have on the bench at home games, as he obviously relishes the atmosphere.

I have no idea whether Martin's any good, as I haven't seen him play yet. His lack of goals does kind of point to Ronan Murray syndrome though.

Whatever happened to Rooney? Not that I want him back or anything...

I feel Collins and Williams could fire them in too. But Collins seems to have been struck by Connellitis, always the one to be taken off even if others are playing worse, always the one to be shifted to the bench.

That said those two won't always work together. I've not seen an effective plan B yet. Storey is still young. Rooney is, well, he hasn't fired or had a chance but I've seen nothing to suggest he is that different from what we have. Martin is short term and yet to fully fire either...

Incidentally, maybe its just me, but I didn't think De Vita was woeful last year at all. He had a dip just after PDC proclaimed as the best left sided player in the division (or whatever), but was always pretty reliable otherwise.

Our fixture list coming up over Xmas/NY is pretty good.

If we can sort out our home form then there is no reason why we can't go an a little run over the next batch of games. (Current league positions are shown next to clubs)

L.Orient (a) 12th
Col U (a) 17th
Pompley (h) 21st
Carlisle (h) 19th

A haul of at least 10 points from those games would see us right in the mix come the NY.

Pre-season I did a guesstimate of points and had us down for 37 at this stage and 41 at the year end. Total for season I had us on 73. Not sure where that would place us regarding position but not top two I would think but if everyone takes points off each other who knows?

Yes we're 8 points better off at the same stage, than the last time we (dis)graced this league, despite not having won so many home games as in season zero.

So that gives reason for optimism, and nothing wrong with that. Added to this is the fact that apart from Ritchie, we haven't got anybody much that is likely to attract massive interest in January. I'm fairly confident we'll avoid relegation this season
