Town chairman insists there is no tension behind the scenes

SWINDON Town chairman Sir William Patey has said there is no “great crisis or tension” at the County Ground, backing the work Paolo Di Canio is doing in all aspects of his job as Robins manager.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. As an unhinged non-native speaker people should not always take to heart what they think PDC says.

Go to Greece, for example, and you'll think they're about to tear each other's heads off. They're not though, they're probably just having a pleasant chat about the weather or calamari. It takes some getting used to.

This. Also the fact the Adver/Beeb love sticking up their attention-grabbing headlines involving the words 'row', 'tensions', 'rant', when the actual interview is nothing of the sort, it's just Paolo airing his views in his own distinct, rambling way.

I was being more general about Paolo's comments as opposed to specific about this weekends interview, agree it was a rant. Just the whole background of adver/beeb articles on Paolo have all been slightly inflammatory. I'm pretty sure Paolo would rant about anything though. If Curly started putting too much sugar in his tea he'd probably come on the radio and make a comment about it that would lead to ridiculous headlines.

I was essentially trying to make the point that as soon as Paolo gets annoyed about something, for the beeb/adver it's shit stirring and negative headline time. Patey is a good enough Diplomat (we should imagine) that he can deal with whatever's going on.

Not only that - they also string out the same interview over a period of several days, giving the impression that he is constantly ranting and raving about something. As if....

Spot on. My wife is French and I remember the first time I had a meal with her family. I had to ask her afterwards what they were all shouting and fighting about.........she was quite surprised that I asked the question because, for her, it was just a "normal" family dinner. They just all have to have their say. I'd imagine an Italian dinner would be the same sort of thing, if not worse, and because of the language differences it is easy to misinterpret what is said as being argumentative or that someone is ranting when, in fact, they are just excited or passionate about whatever they are talking about.

Try explaining something to an audience in another language and you can very easily come across in a way that you don't intend.

Fair play to Patey for trying to paper over the cracks, but what a load of horseshit. When Bob Holt tried coming out with this kind of stuff, we were rolling in the aisles. Lost in translation my arse, no-one seriously believes Bodin and Di Canio are getting on just dandy behind the scenes and sharing a joke over a cup of tea in the corridor while admiring each other's tracksuits.
