Think his comments and stance is being reported inaccurately and out of context. He basically said legislation; would be difficult and complicated, would be a dangerous step in the direction of removing the freedom of the press, isn't necessary at this point to implement the key points of the Leveson report. He wants to give the press a chance a small window to put it's house in order and if they don't they'll look at legislation. I'm not convinced any major legislation is required. The main problem with the press can be summed up in one word for me - Murdoch. If we ban that family from any involvement in news in the UK then most of the problem will be solved. Then we just need a massive increase in the amount of damages the courts award when the press over step the line. If they were facing payouts in the millions for running false and damaging stories they would think twice before running them.

Well, he does have the hand of Murdoch exploring his intestines, but that doesn't necessarily make this decision wrong.

Painfully obvious that self-regulation by the Press Complaints Commission just did not work and something has to replace it. I certainly do not like the idea of Politicians having a say as to what can be printed even if they think they are all as pure as the driven snow and would never falsify expenses, have bits on the side, sell secrets to the highest bidder, be in the pay of lobbyists etc. etc. etc. If it comes to pass that "free speech" becomes a thing of the past what next, in the extreme anything we comment upon on a forum like this eventually comes under the same banner as already happens in China?

There's a difference between freedom of speech and freedom to act like a cunt and hurt other people.

Exactly and the quicker Cameron realises that the more chance he will have of getting the electorate onside with him - but whilst he acts like a puppet and Murdoch pulls his strings the bigger cunt he will look.

There is not a politician in the country that would even want to be in the same room as a Murdoch, let alone speak to them or have anything whatsoever to do with them. You could argue Cameron is trying to keep the press in general on his side but I'm not sure that is any worse than Clegg trying to be different or Miliband saying the opposite of everything Cameron says. There wouldn't be an issue at all if there weren't so many morons in this country that believe everything they read in the press and allow them to influence how they vote in elections. It's alright blaming the press and the Government, but we enable the press by purchasing their papers - Murdoch wouldn't have printed those stories if the public weren't lapping them up. Anyone that criticises Murdoch but buys the Sun, the Times or subscribes to Sky is a hypocrite.

Yep
Here's a song. (Yes I know it's not about the Sun/Murdoch, but the point remains).

I wouldn't trust MP's to appoint anyone 'independent' as all they do is appoint party lackeys on a big salary for 'working' a few days a week, and anyway, quite a number of the MP's should be behind bars after the expenses scandal. Why only about a dozen was ever bought to justice is beyond me?

so theres two ways of looking at this
the problem is that the press have only had 25 goes to get their house in order, so its understandable to think that this time they will do it
or that they are hoping that people forget about it and bury it in the long grass, in exchange for a vote tory endorsement at the next election
