Me and the missus are off in a couple of weeks for a 4-day weekend. Haven't been since I was about 14, and therefore too young for any enjoyment of liquid Scotland. Any suggestions from the TEF?

I was up there at the weekend for the Carlisle game. If you're looking for a bit of life then Grassmarket or Niddry Street seem to be the places to be. For a quieter pint try the Oxford Bar and a bus ride to Leith gives some decent restaurants and pubs.

I spend about 4 weeks a year up there in Edinburgh due to the mother in law emigrating there about 10 years ago, its a lovely city as long as you stay out of Niddrie and Leith which are a wee bit rough and full of druggies and prossies.

The National Museum of Scotland is brilliant and free and recently been renovated and enlarged massively. Thats just over the road from Greyfriars Bobby and a few lovely food and watering establisments such as the pub Greyfriars Bobby Bar that serves good ales and very good food if a little pricey.

You have the obvious Edinburgh castle which is nice, Arthurs seat serves great views around the Forth as well as the Forth Bridge which is worth a venture out to. Take a bus tour of the places of interest and the Edinburgh Dungeon is a good way to spend a couple of hours right above Waverley station.

Watch out for the roadworks where they are putting in the long overdue and waste of money tram system thats all through the city centre and will cause lots of traffic problems.

Pop out a little further and sisit the Royal Yacht Britannia on the way out to Leith docks not a lovely area but a nice visit none the less. Or pop along to Rosslyn Chapel on the outskirts thats very interesting too.

Take your pick of the pubs but be aware that lots serve only Tennants lager and Belhaven bitter and black and thats it, definately ones for the locals!

Oh and if you like KFC in the land of the blue skinned race they serve breakfast...yes KFC breakfast! they are currently running trials up there that will come south of the border soon if its successful, or at least they did when I was up there in August for the Festival....hope this helps and enjoy your visit.

Cheers lads. I was wondering about the Tram system, as I remember that my dad came back from a visit to Scotland following a band about a couple of years ago saying that all the cab drivers everywhere did was complain about it. Kind of appalling it's STILL being worked on.

KFC breakfast? Wow. They are advanced up north aren't they? Definitely be trying that.

The trams system will be worked on for at least another 2 years and maybe longer and its about a quarter the length it was supposed to be initally and costs about double the original estimate, everyone there is moaning about it and the traffic problems it is causing are horrendous too.

Enjoy your trip it is a lovely city with "mostly" friendly natives Wink.

Did anyone see the Ross Kemp from Glasgow programme earlier on in the week?

There was an alcy fella whose toes had gone so manky that he pulled them off and kept them on the top of the TV.

A bit. Why did they feel the need to have subtitles for the locals?

I don't, but the missus has just finished work and so her dad bought the tickets for us to celebrate.

I actually remember going to Glasgow when we were in Scotland on Holiday during aforementioned 14yr old trip. It's quite nice Apart from the 95% of it that isn't of course. I've heard it described as the 'real' scottish capital though, as several scotchmen I know say Edinburgh is just an English colony now.

The missus is a yank, so I'm forbidding her from talking to the locals whilst we're there. We may be tourists but I sure as hell don't want to get looked at like I'm American.
