I know there's some financial types on here. I never had a credit card before, and don't think I have a credit history/score.
Is it worthwhile taking out a graduate credit card while i can (something like £500 limit, interest free for 6 months), and just using that smartly - paying it off promptly etc - so I have some sort of credit record for when I need it for something proper in the future?
I don't really want to do that - I've already got a heft student overdraft to work my way out of - but if its worth it in the long run I guess I may aswell.
Before anyone gets cocky, I have tried looking online, but can't find anything.
Thank you xx

I wouldn't plan to live off it. The thinking was to have one now, while its affordable (free), in case I ever need one properly in the future.

Do it but be sensible: keep the limit low; use it regularly but pay off in full if you can; etc.
Pretty sure your credit score is based on all sorts including your bank details so the fact you have an overdraft will be part of the equation, although only a very small part.

I always got the lecture from the parents, never get a credi card etc etc. but i think itf managed properly they can be useful. I look for the best intrest free offer and then caculate how much i can afford a month so its payed off in that time period. So as long as you dont go stupid with them and get 5 at a time they can help.

Has anyone ever had a natwest graduate credit card? Do they exist?
I always thought they did, but a quick google has me thinking they may only be for students.
Sorry for going all 4d

Reason to get a card :
• Convenience • Benefits (cash back/points) • Credit rating improvement
None of these are worth it if you can’t afford to pay it off straight away.

Thats the reason I got one, but lost my job I wasn't able to pay it off straight away, and couldn't afford the re-payments. Got it sorted now though and haven't used the Credit Card for months now.

Credit cards are alright in small doses, sometimes for emergency payments, like when my son's car went wrong and I had to fork out over £500 on his behalf!! I didn't have the cash to hand and he no longer has a credit card, so it was over to dad!! As I say a credit card is good, but please don't rely on it to get you out of trouble. These cash back ones seem to be useful, 3% back on petrol as long as you pay it off by a certain date look to be a good thing.

It would be better to pay off your overdraft and lower the limit.

Agree with this. Don't get one. Pay for what you can afford. Credit cards are designed to get you into trouble, owing thousands, then it mounts up with extra charges ....

Dunno about graduate, but they did have a student credit card. I got one and regret it to this day! Dont do it! Great idea in principle shit in reality. I started off with a tiny limit which month by month got bigger! The relief when I paid it off after uni was the best thing ever!
