For the last five years or so, my wife and I have shared one car. She is the owner & registered keeper. The car is insured in her name (policyholder & main driver) with me as named driver. We (she) have 6 years NCD.

We have just bought a second car, which is for her. We want to both be insured on both vehicles. Our existing insurer (Churchill) have quoted £600 to insure the second car, but comparison sites show it's possible to insure it for around £350. I understand that any policy for the second car will start with 0 NCD.

To keep things on the straight & narrow, we've spoken to Churchill about changing the policy on the first car to have me as the main driver and this can be done for a few £ extra per month. My wife will remain as the policyholder though.

Now, the conundrum is this. The first car as already stated is in my wife's name. The second car will be in my name. Is it legit to have the cars insured as follows:

Car 1
Wife is owner & RK
Wife is policyholder, me as main driver, wife is named driver

Car 2
I am owner & RK
Wife is policyholder and main driver, me as named driver

It's seems a rather complicated way of doing things, but it seems to be the cheapest solution as I have 0 NCD so having a policy in my name would bump up the cost.

Thats pretty much what we do. The cars got mixed up over the years due to company cars and they like - only difference being is that my wife and I have one policy each. As long as one of you is the RK and one of you is the LO then they seem pretty happy.

Will you be getting a NCB ?

We need to check with Churchill what happens to the NCD when I'm made the main driver. I think that as the policyholder, the NCD will continue to accrue in my wife's name, so she'll be earning NCD on both cars and I won't have any.

Could you not look at Admiral's multicar where you would get a NCB ?

Thought about it, but it means cancelling the insurance on our first car and transferring the NCD etc. etc. which is hassle I can do without.

Plus it doesn't really bother me that I have nil NCD.

You cannot use the same NCD on 2 cars - a colleague of mone found this out - speak to them as you have been named driver for x years they may allow that to count as your NCD on a policy as you with the wife as named driver
