Chatting to an mufc fan today re: Powell. We were trying to recall previous players who had made a similar step and succeeded. Chris smalling went from Maidstone to Fulham. Any others?

Come on Juddie, it's not that hard if you look back at the Crewe conveyor belt of talent: Rob Jones,Neil Lennon,Danny Murphy,Dean Ashton, and even Seth Johnson and Robbie Savage (via Man Utd youth team) Graham Roberts and Andy Townsend both started at non league Weymouth. Kevin Keegan and Ray Clemence went from Scunthorpe to Liverpool. Gary Mabbutt was playing for England in less than a year, after leaving Bristol Rovers for Tottenham.

Could add Shane Long and Seamus Coleman to those Irish lads.

When the Town were in Division 4 (1983) we sold Paul Rideout to Aston Villa. He had a choice of Villa or Liverpool and turned down a move to Anfield.
Les Ferdinand started at Hayes and Nathan Ellington at Walton and Hersham FC.
Goalkeeper Nigel Martyn started off in the Cornish non leagues, before joining Rovers and then moving to Palace.
