...Over the same period as Talk Talk ('82-'86) were the absolute bees bollocks.

82 - New Gold Dream
84 - Sparkle In The Rain
86 - Once Upon A Time

Saw them at the MK Bowl in 86 and was blown away.

Saw them again at Cardiff Arms Park in 89 and was very disappointed.

Had they changed?

Or had I?

Or both?

I think exactly the same OST.

I saw them on the Saturday and Sunday at MK in 86, thought they were excellent. Once Upon a time is my fave album of theirs.

Saw them at the NEC Birmingham in 89, Gun were supporting them, and I thought it was poor basically, there were too many extended songs and It put me off them a bit.

Line Up hadn't changed as far as I know, it wasn't you, it was them.

Hmmm...That's what I suspected.  They got too fucking up themselves.  Shame really.

Yeh, it is a shame. I saw U2 at MK in 85 and they were about the same level of fame as Simple Minds around that period, Simple Minds may have been a bit ahead even. One Bands career went one way and the other Band the other!

And yes you're right they did get too up themselves, can't remember what the 89 album was called but I didn't think much of it at the time.

Simple Minds and U2 were indeed very much 'neck and neck' for a few years in the popularity stakes.  You seemed to have to like one but not the other.  I was very much in the Simple Minds camp.

But then sanity set back in, Weller released Stanley Road, I got back on the straight and narrow, kicked the stadium bands into touch and life returned to normal Cool

I didn't mind "Songs from the Big Chair", but they got too up themselves as well. Their 89 album was crap, must be something to do with that year.

Completely bizarre. Are you sure that you two aren't my long lost triplet brothers???

When I went to see Simple Minds in Germany (with Talk Talk as support) in '86, it was on one of those MGP coach trips (Mead Gould Promotions? Methinks), Radio 1 was on. I remember  the DeeJay saying "and that was Simple Minds, the best band in Great Britain. Now I'm going to play the the best band in these islands..." and he put U2 on. Needless to say we booked up another MGP trip to see them at the Point in Dublin about a month later.

I agree, Simple Minds did lose the plot, but then U2 did around the time of The Fly etc...

Hey, just remembered that Cactus World News supported SM too. Remember them? They were good. Still got them on vinyl...

Nothing wrong with that, sisters weren't keen on doing boys stuff, and I was the youngest.
