Holmes fee too much for Swindon

SWINDON Town were interested in bringing Lee Holmes to the County Ground before the winger agreed to join Preston, but the Robins were unwilling to match
the offer tabled by their League One rivals.

I liked this quote from JW:

" “We were keen to have him but Preston were prepared to offer him a package that we would not."

I like the fact that he says "WOULD not" not "COULD not"...big difference.

Really surprised that he got a six figure signing on fee!

He's good, but not pay-over-the-odds good.

The amounts of money (wages and signing on fee) being talked about with Holmes are surprising. For somebody who has experienced such a torrid time with injuries throughout his career, it seems a very risky strategy. It could all backfire if he gets crocked again 15 games into the new season, which will probably happen.

Is anyone else concerned that this is the same PNE that has the infamous Peter Risdale as their chairman?

They'll be like a lower league Leeds soon, and plummet down the leagues. It wasn't so long ago that they had money issues, so where is the new investment coming from?

Ageed but it will backfire on Preston (I do think they are flirting with disaster with Westley in charge) and not the wealthier Holmes.

When Swindon first had him on loan he was a genuine England prospect and nowadays he has to find games in League Two. I dare say that he has a good agent which would no doubt be one of the final relics of his early years at Derby County.

Good luck to him.

It amazes me that clubs still appoint this guy given his awful track record of running a football club.
These clubs are in a pretty bad position when he takes over, but they are in much worse state when he leaves.

It's the equivalent of being in hospital and having Harold Shipman appointed as your personal doctor.

To be fair, JW said we 'wouldn't' match what Preston offered - not we 'couldn't'.

Nice to see we are not prepared to pay over the odds no matter who the player is

It is good to hear.

I have a niggling doubt in my mind that the board are allowing themselves to be bullied a little by PDC in the transfer market. Stuff like this is quite re-assuring as it suggests my doubts may be wide off the mark.
