Rooney: Competition good for the team

LUKE Rooney is chomping at the bit to start against Bristol Rovers tomorrow after missing out on playing at Wembley, but accepts he must be patient for his chance to come again.

I always thought it was 'champing', not chomping.

This statistic suggests otherwise http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=champing+at+the+bit&word2=chomping+at+the+bit

But OED confirms your preferred "champ" precedes the relative upstart "chomp":

champ at the bit
Origin: late Middle English: probably imitative

chomp at the bit
Origin: mid 17th century: imitative
