Just perusing what's left on the free transfer front and come up with a few viable names that may or may not fit the bill.

Alton Thelwell - Hull Free Transfer

Still with Hull but is currently available on a free transfer.  The ex-Spurs player and possible one time King target (anyone confirm?) is a right back but can play comfortable as a centre back.

A player of undoubted class at this level but struggled with an injury last season, which has persuaded Taylor to let him go.

In reality though he's on a fairly high wage at Hull and if it wasn't for his injury last season would easily have secured a 'Championship' club.  In our favour is that he's a London boy and a move back down South may just hold some swing.

Barry Ashby – Gillingham Free Transfer

Big centre half released by Gillingham in similar circumstances to Smith.  The player has hit out at reports over excessive wage demands and stated that he did not actually want to leave the club.  At 33 he’ll add some experience and presence to the back line and is the sort of player we have been missing in recent seasons.

Has been linked to Bristol Rovers but looks to be one still on the look out for a new club.

Frankie Simek – The Arse Free Transfer

American defender that’s been with Arsenal for years but failed to cut the mustard and break the first team. Quite highly rated and had a good loan spell at QPR last season although those aside don’t know too much else about the chap.

Gary Croft – Baardiff Possible Free Transfer

The left back can also play at centre back has been handed an opportunity to try and prove his fitness to new boss Dave Jones if not it’s likely he’s on the way out.  Doesn’t quite fit the bill but is a quality player worth looking at if he can prove his fitness.  Looks an unlikely one given Cardiff’s lack of defenders at present and he’s played well so far in pre-season by all accounts but worth keeping tabs on all the same.

Gerry Taggert – Stoke Possible Free Transfer

Big centre half considering his options at Stoke.  Linked with Barnsley the other week but denied he is on the move, yet.  Realistically well out of our price bracket but King has a fine track record when it comes to convincing players to take a drop and play for the Town.  With the clock ticking to the 31/08/05 when the transfer window slams shut until January it gives us more and more leverage in the market as placers face the prospect of several months of unemployment.

Not a great deal in terms of being realistic at this point.  However  even players like Taggart will find their options severely limited after five months out of the game and be unable to demand anything other than what's offered to them in January.
