If it's stereotypes we're dealing with, I think you have to recognise that Italy is a motley collection of City States thrown together by Garibaldi (and others) in the Risorgimento of the mid-19th century.
He is no more Sicilian or Venetian than I am Scottish - and I'm not. First and foremost, Paolo is a Roman. He kicks ass. (Most of the time.)
