They may have got a few more if they had been given more £26 tickets. I believe of the inital allocation they asked for they were only given 1500 £26 tickets.
There may be an economic point as well. Unemployment is quite a bit higher up there so may have played a part, in additon to the fact it is alot more expensive for them when travel is factored in.
I dont think 16k is the worst ever. I think Carlisle took a few less for the final last year, but there you need to take into account the fact that they had got there 2 years in a row so alot will have decided not to go second time around.

Chesterfield is quite a small town, so 16K is a sizeable % of the population, and the unemployment rate there is less than in Swindon. We'd be needing to take 40K +, to get near their %

That is true if you take into account JUST the population of the town itself. But if you take into consideration a 15 mile catchment area then their population is approx double that of the 15 mile radius of Swindon.

But then you're into Sheffield and Nottingham's catchment..... Going back to another point, I don't suppose Chesterfield see themselves as much more than a Div 3 club, not having been in the second tier since the 50's. Although we might have aspirations for better, the reality is that we're at heart still a Div 3 club.

Chesterfield don't really have a catchment area as Sheffield is 10 minutes down the road and Nottingham isn't far the other way either. Both of those cities have 2 clubs as well. Also Chesterfield is in Derbyshire so there are probably a fair few Derby fans around as well. To be fair when you take all of that into consideration it's not a bad figure of ticket sales.
