Macari - Paolo can't repeat what I did

LEGENDARY Town boss Lou Macari tells GARY ROSE why the dynasty he built from the fourth tier of English football can’t be repeated by Paolo Di Canio in the modern era.

I love Macari. I don't think of myself as having heroes but Macari would be as close as it gets for me.

What exactly is he saying though? We can't go up??

If he is, that is clearly bollocks.

I dont think he is saying we cant go up.  More that Macari built the foundations at Swindon that were carried on by Ardiles/Hoddle and led to us taking a place at the top table.

With the endless amounts of cash, that even most midtable championship clubs have these days.  It makes it 1000 times more difficult for a team to go from league 2 to premier league as was possible back in the old days.

I may be wrong though!

I think he is saying that modern players have a sizeable element who are happy to pick up a wage without doing the work required. Whereas in Macari's day the money wasn't there so the motivation to get yourself up the league to get more cash* was more profound.

*Or failing that some brown envelope payments.

Look at likes of Hull, Swansea and to a lesser extent Wigan and Fulham. It can be done and I know its difficult but you do need some investment behind you.

Wigan and Fulham bought their way there. It wasn't just some investment, it was a serious amount of investment - which we have very little chance of doing.

It was so much easier in the 80's.

Congratulations to Gary Rose for comparing footballers' wages now and then without accounting for 26 years of inflation. Macari makes a valid point, but the article backs it up with stupid figures.

Blackpool would probably be a better example than most of those, as they've done it slightly more off their own backs. Ok, the chairman has put some funds in but financially it has been a small-scale project, rather than a "chuck loads of cash in and hope for the best" type job.
