True story that went something like this,Peter Whiteford is 92 a Canadian living in Toronto  and recently visited fallen comrades in France at the war graves sites.
On arrival at the airport in Paris he was struggling to find his passport and hence...

Passport Please!..shouts the man at customs in a hurried manner.

Sorry replies Peter,i seem to be struggling to find it in my bag.

Look you are holding up all the other passengers,come on come we need to see it,says the irate customs man.

Peter is embarrased and apologises but still no passport.



It is common knowledge that everyone visiting a foreign country has to show there passport snaps the customs man...it is the same in France you know!

Again Peter apologises and says well the last time i visited i didnt need to show my passport to anyone and continued to fumble through his luggage.

What rubbish says the customs man now in a near rage..when did this happen he said with a sneer.

Well it was D Day in 1944 says Peter...and i couldn't find a Frenchman to show it to he says in a soft voice.

You could hear the pin drop.

Reminds me of an apparently true story my father-in-law told me about a British Aiways pilot, that got lost whilst taxiing at Frankfurt airport sometime during the late 60's.
Apparently, the female air traffic controller was getting more and more irate with his inability to find his allocated stand, until she snapped and said "my god man, have you never flown to Frankfurt before?
His reply of, "yes, twice in 1944 but it was dark and I never landed", was met with silence from the air traffic controller and uncontrollable laughter from the other pilots listening in....

Reminds me of the story when a group of tourists were having the tour of Auschwitz when one of the group pipes up :

"My Grandfather died here you know "

Very solemnly the group leader asks "do you know how he died?"

"He got pissed and fell out the guard tower" was the reply followed by complete silence.
