Smith wants midfield slot

JONATHAN Smith is determined to make one of the centre midfield positions his own after clearly impressing Town boss Paolo Di Canio in training so far.

What does this mean for our Tennants-drinking joker?  Can't imagine another season of appearances from the bench will do him much good.

It looks like PDC wants a very physical ball winning central midfield pair, which sounds about right for Lge 2. They are likely to pick up knocks and suspensions though, which should give Ferry a chance to shine.

It would be a shame if we lost him, he's a cracking little player.

If it becomes apparent early on that he's not going to be a regular starter then I imagine he will be gone in the January transfer window. Maybe even August, which would be a shame. You couldn't blame him though.

Simon Ferry won't be ignored under Di Canio if he works to the ethic that his boss expects his squad.

If Smith and Risser are indeed selected ahead of him and are doing the business then Ferry will have to wait his turn.

I can't see him doing that though. Not after last season.

You don't think he'll get a chance under the new regime or that he won't work hard?

I honestly think that Ferry would have been bombed out if he wasn't considered useful.

We've only played 2 friendlies, both against poor opposition. We know Ferry's quality so I see no reason, as yet, to believe PdC has made his mind up about his first central midfield pairing. I expect to see Fezza starting the first game.

True, PdC probably saw enough of Ferry from the vids to know what he can do.  Probably knows a lot less about Smith so keen to see what he brings to the table.

Good. I hope you're both right. We need him. IF though, Di Canio decides that Risser and Smith or A N Other are is first choice midfielders I don't see Ferry hanging around too long. Certainly not after last season when he got seriously pissed around. He just wants to be playing and that's fair enough.

It means he will have to knuckle down and fight for his place.  As much as I like him, if he doesn't fight for his place, he can leave now.
