Question though. If we sign smith as well, thats 2 central midfielders in Whalley and Smith. We alson have migs as a cenral midfielder, but we will still require someone on the left as its clear both Smith and whalley are stricty central. What can we do about left midfield? Dukey? or is his deal about to go in the bin along with igoe's?

 I think the way Kingy said "he has the left foot we have been looking for" i reckon that means he will try him on the left wing.... i know he is a central midfielder, but as we are still without one, and his other target is ment to be a defender, then its looking more likely, he sounds good, but im more excited about the sounds of smith.... must admit i havent heard of him before, but 4 player of the years in 8 seasons, and a midfielder.... i so hope he joins

i don't think that would be a major issue, we just need someone to kick people    alot of the good anchormen don't tend to be able to pass but there job is to get the ball back and let the creative players play

Whalley's main strength is his quality passing.  He is generally described as a creative playmaker. Paul Smith is the strong midfielder type.

The skilful midfielder came to Valley Parade in a £750,000 double swoop along with Ashley Westwood from Crewe Alexandra in July 1998. Chris Kamara had tried to bring Whalley to Bradford on transfer deadline day 1997, but his £1million bid was turned down.Whalley is one of the many players to come off the Dario Gradi production line at Crewe. He looked destined for a move to either Liverpool or Spurs in 1997 and later Forest, Coventry and Blackburn were interested in the talented midfielder, but he eventually signed for Bradford.An excellent creative playmaker, Whalley is known for the quality of his passing. He is also a hard working player in the middle of the park who can open up defences with a creative spark. He was outstanding in City's promotion season in the 1998/1999 season but the following term in the Premiership, he was often left out of the starting line-up. If Whalley is given time on the ball he can be a world beater but in the heat of the action his lack of a physical presence can leave him isolated.

Another recognized face amongst the trialists at training on Thursday was former Crystal Palace and Middlesborough defender Dean Gordon.

"Dean Gordon (above) is here as well. We need a left back and he has come to train with us for a few days and we shall see what happens. I haven't spoken about money with him yet but I will have a look at him. He has been playing in Cyprus and looks pretty fit at the moment," said King speaking on Thursday after training.
