Easily the best player of my generation. Doesn't crave the fame and just enjoyed playing football.

Very Good, however....if he loves playing fooball that much wouldnt he drop a division?
Its just a shame these guys are so rich that they dont have to , unlike the old days.

I hope he stays in the game in some capacity. Don't think he'd make it as a manager, but reckon he'd be a great coach.

Too early to retire in my opinion - still looked (for me) their best midfielder when he came on the pitch...
Rumour is he will take over their Reserves moving forward...

Technically, the best midfielder England has produced since Bobby Charlton.
Shame he retired from England at 29.

676 games played for Man U is a fabulous achievement in itself.
As Mr Verve says, probably retired from playing for England too early, he would still get into our midfield now I would have thought!

He retired because he played under Sven on the left hand side. He has asthma I think and couldnt do all the tracking back plus couldn't deal with the hot climate at tournaments. Does anyone remember his two goals against Georgia for England at the old Wembley? Brilliant.

Was it a shame though, hadn't been reproducing his club form for a long time (sound familiar?). Probably helped him prolong his career.

And the hat trick against Poland (I think?).

He went three years without scoring for England until he finally did at Euro 2004 against Croatia, ironically his penultimate game for England. I still think he could've played until around 2006 time, one last world cup perhaps.
