played a course in Surrey yesterday with a mate and his Dad - I only started playing about September last year.

Given up with the driver for now - 5 wood off the tee for me !

Played a par 5 - almost 500 yards long.  Hit a 5 wood off the tee, another straight 5 wood within 20 yards of the green - a 7 iron chip and run within 6 inches of the hole, then in for 4 - first time ever a "proper" birdie on a par 5 !

Followed it with a 5 wood off the tee on a par 3 200 yard hole - caught a lucky bounce on the left side of the green and bounced and rolled within about 9 inches of the hole

Those are the 2 holes i will remember - not the other 16 which were largely forgettable !!!!

Yep, as the old saying goes..driving for show...putting for dough
Spot on and when you get bored of practising putting a little session with a wedge chipping onto the green does wonders for the score.  I rarely hit the greens in regulation but have loads of greenside chips.  Getting it close really takes the heat off those bloody 5 footers

agree about putting.half your game is played on the greens.i'm ok at it and generally 2 putt most greens, with the odd 1 putt and 3's too.
my lad is great off the tee and fairway and hits it straight most of the time.his putting is dog shit though and ruins his game.

I've never played golf, I've been meaning to try it out. Is it hard for beginners?

Its not too bad.

Get the swing right and keep your eye on the ball and you wont go wrong...

I went around the Sawgrass course in the States in 19 once. 17 hole in one's. Devastatingly i hit a 2 on the 18th hole, it was a par 7 mind.

My playing partner hit his ball into a lake and as i was fishing it out i caught a 79lb carp.
