It at least raises a question about legitimacy of play-offs.
Bollocks, the Play Offs are one the best periods of the football calendar, that game last night was a great example. Without the playoffs some of our greatest days would never have happened. |

It does...but objections have been raised for years, and the system has survived because the attractions outweigh the concerns. When we went up in 1993, Pompey (who saw their team finish in 3rd place behind Newcastle and West Ham - and 12 points ahead of us) were griping about it for months afterwards. April would be a meaningless month for about half the division without the play offs. |

Don't disagree at all, but 16 points is a very big gap, given how much hangs on the final outcome. In theory you could have top three ordered on goal difference, two of which are automatically promoted, the third is ditched to a team with 16 (or however many) points less. Not arguing for a change, or against the quality of many of the play-off games, just questioning how fair the system is. |

I think you could certainly look at giving more of an advantage to the 3rd placed team. As things stand, the only benefit you get for finishing 3rd is home advantage in the second leg of the semis, which is not that much of an advantage. You could look at a system such as the following, perhaps:
Game 1: 5th vs 6th
Game 2: 4th vs Winner of Game 1
Game 3: 3rd vs Winner of Game 2

Not strictly true Ardiles, as the 3rd place team get the advantage of playing the 6th place team. Your method is a reasonable alternative, assuming you have the last game at Wembley as a showpiece, but there would be two less matches, which would impact on gate money/tv revenues |

Big fan of the playoffs.
Yes you could argue its a little unfair on the team finishing 3rd if they've done miles better over the course of a whole season, but the excitement of knowing if you catch some form at the right time - as Reading are showing at the moment - that you could still get promoted gives a lot of teams something to play for down the stretch of the season.

I'd like to see a return to the format that I think was used in the very first play offs where they didn't just involve the teams fighting for promotion, but also the teams fighting relegation from the division above. So if you're not good enough to beat teams at the bottom of the league above, you dont go up
