another thought...if we are not fielding a reserve team this year...
1) can we not get away with a slightly smaller squad?
2) how do the players not in the team get fit?
3) Isnt there a danger that the squad players get more restless?

if the three trialists sign plus Hugo our squad is looking good.

Possibly a LB required (who'd have thought we'd be saying that after last season) and another striker

The arranged friendlies throughout the season will replace reserves matches and will probably be more beneficial.

Good questions there. I was wondering this myself the other week. You're right about the squad and it's clearly a cost cutting measure to save on travel expences etc but also what good is it going to do players like Jordan Pavett who probably won't get as many minutes as some of the others? I guess this season we'll train properly and have proper fitness regimes etc but still players need match time and practice. Maybe squad rotation is in PDC's thoughts?

That's all well and good and i'd agree but isn't it rare that you get these "behind closed doors" games now? After all most teams will still have a reserve game to play in the week.

Thing is how many of the 1st team squad would actually play in the reserv games anyway

It'll be against whoever is free and I imagine, not that I know, that they will be on a similar basis as the reserve league set-up (once a fortnight?)

...and then there's the Wiltshire Premier Shield Smiley

The fact is, our Reserve division was a bit of a joke wasn't it? Behind-closed-doors arrangements won't be hard to arrange. Teams often arrange them and sometimes with the sole purpose of helping a player(s) come back from injury.

Isn't it becoming common place to not have a reserve team anymore? Especially clubs in our division. Could be wrong, but I thought a lot of lower league clubs were starting to get rid of reserve sides, and instead opted for playing local friendlies.
