Martin Jol just left Ajax...

That might explain that then.

Ashley wouldn't pay enough to afford Jol. Houghton was probably the worst paid manager in the PL.

On who? (Genuine question, I didn't think Newcastle had brought anyone in much apart from the aged crock Campbell)

2mil for the loan of ben arfa (with an agreed 5mil fee at end of season) not sure where it stands now with his injury
3.5mil on cheik tiote
1.2 mil on perch
1.8 mil on mike williamson
1.5 mil on leon best
750k on danny simpson
1mil on wayne routledge

Im not saying these were good signing but it shows that he is willing to give a bit of money out.

Ben arfa and possibly simpson aside, I don't think you can call any of them good signings. At least not for the money they've paid

Tiote has been brilliant. Williamson and Routledge have been good- especially for the money paid for them.

1.5 mill for Leon Best? Has even kicked a ball for them? That's stupid money.

Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson, Wayne Routledge and Leon Best were all signed start of the year and not in the summer with the view to helping them get promoted.

So based on your intial list they signed 2 permanent signings (Perch and Tiote) for a total of £4.7 million and a loan signing (Ben Arfa) at £2 million.  So a total of £6.7 million to keep a squad of championship players in the premiership, the job Chris Hughton was doing was excellent and Mike Ashley has made a crazy decision sacking him.

think you have got the wrong end of the stick, if you read the thread i am in no way supporting mike ashleys decision, im just stating that there will be some money made available to the next manager

But the original post was not saying they wouldn't give Jol any money (although if they do, it's a bit bloody much as they told Hughton there wouldn't be any available to him) but that they couldn't (or wouldn't) afford to pay him what he'd want, never mind anyone he might want to sign
