what benefits? people would visit castles and palaces if the monarchy was abolished.people love history and that won't be effected.

It's the monarchy that people come to see, not their homes - it's a pity we don't like and respect it as much as the rest of the world does. Never understand what the fuss is about with the anit-monarchists, the monarchy is slimmed right down and doesn't cost much - as a country we piss away more money on trivial things every single day.

It is a "feel good" story for a lot of the country in tought times. Too many Diana was a sign of hope really and "all thats good in the world", Kate clearly will be taking that role now, like it or not.

At least the monarchy does something for their money..... and we make a profit on it too. There are thousands who do fuck all in this country & we support them & make a loss. Extremist anti british muslim poppy burners for one example.
The best arguement for the monarchy though is the alternative of course. We'd end up with a president. Imagine a President Cameron,  President Brown, or even worse vice president Prescott or Clegg. Of course I might be wrong & we would have to bow & scrape to President Rumpoy.

Give me an alright Prince William & a good looking princess any day thanks

Yeah, because they're placed on display in the Royal Palaces like monkeys at the zoo aren't they. 99.999% of tourists must never clap eyes on a royal, but they still keep coming; and France still seemed quite busy with tourists last time I was there.

No one really thinks through the consequences of getting rid of the monarchy. If they did, they'd realise it would be yet another politician taking the presidency role and I reckon we're all sick enough of them already without giving them more power. Besides, it's the prime minister that runs the country already - the Queen has fuck all powers left and doesn't exercise those she does have.

Yeah, but I didn't say royals - I said monarchy. You might not see the royals themselves but you've got stuff like the guards outside Buckingham Palace, the flags showing whether she's in or not and so on. Foreigners (especially the Yanks) love all that shit. Sure we'd get tourists without the monarchy but we'd have lost one of the major attractions.

I think the main objection that republicans have is they don't like being 'subjects' of the monarch...which I can understand.  For me, it's not very high up my list of things that keep me awake at night though.  Some aspects of the monarchy are a bit odd...obsession with killing wild animals, funny accents etc.  But on balance, I think they're OK.  Anti-monarchist sentiment is nothing new - it's existed in various degrees right throughout history.  If we were going to get rid of it, I think we'd have done it by now.

Intersting point about the gifts, flags etc and the revenue from these.

Lets not forget most of this will be made in the Far East probably China.  Non of the revenue from this production, ie staff wages will be paid out to uk staff.

Re the royals attracting income.

People come to see the history not the people. Tourists don't go to the Tower of London to see the Royals. They go for the history. They don't visit France to see the Royals they visit the beautiful Palaces for the buildings and the history.

The tourist trade would manage without the Royals.

Oh one more thing. The royals and their PR claim she's middle class. I'm not sure if I know too many middle class families that talk like her.....  A very strange and distant perseption of middle class!

Oh yes just one more thought!

Isn't this more about protecting the family business.

Daddy has completely thrown a spanner in the works by marrying the ugly one!  She won't be accepted by the general public as queen so get his son to marry and by-pass Charlie and make wills king.

Problem solved!!

If you really need to see how ugly camilla is come on down to bath on Thursday, she's turning on the xmas lights!!  Oh joy really useful!

We did in 1648. Eventually it turned to shit and we got them back in 1660.

We obviously didn't give it long enough. If we only got rid of them for 12 minutes when people were at work then nobody would have had time to get use to it.

I don't understand why people moan about england losing it's heritage then want rid of the monarchy. If you want to live in america, move there. This is england, deal with it
