 God who would have a job like that, seems like way to much hard work... definatly sounds like they should make a computer program that you can put all available dates and non available etc. and put all the teams in and let the program do it for you, or is tat just to simple??

I believe they do use a computer programmer to do some of it but it would be pretty tricky to write something to cater for all the different combinations as the aricle says.  The type of knowledge required would not easily be put into the necessary algorithms.

Things like a boxing day fixture of Town versus City would seem logical to a computer and yet would never be sanctioned by the police.
