serious question here, what feeling do you (and others) get when you become gramar police? As i doubt its to genuinly help people become better spellers.

I see it everyday on facebook and other forums respectivly, and i just don't get it.

Serious answer  - some days are better than others for me, but generally it really grates when I see instances of horrible/careless spelling. I know posts aren't supposed to be legal documents, but I tend to attach less credence to posts that contain such errors.

The more sanctimonious the post, the more liable I am to point out these things (not necessarily in the case of your post)

I also take great delight in winding up knowledgeable and erudite posters when they make a rare slip (eg Reg)

Bite the bullet...Comes from the English civil war when musket lead shotte was cast in moulds, sometimes imperfections made it difficult for the musketeer to load the ball so he had to bite or chew bits off so it fitted down the barrel. 

This practise continued into the nineteenth century, and was one of the causes of the Indian Mutiny - the cartridges were greased with cow fat, and Hindu soldiers were expected to 'bite the bullet', which they were notr keen to do, because of cows being sacred and that....

That's fair enough but some people are forever saying things and it gets a bit tiresome. Some people are guilty of horrible/careless spelling as you say but some people can't write proper 

As for the swearing the clue is in the 80% bollocks surely?

Without wanting to ruin the thread and make it descend into debate (probably too late now I've started typing), I'm of the same opinion as nev.

I know I'm not personally always 100% correct with my spelling and grammar and I fully understand that some people have dyslexia and/or other learning difficulties and therefore do struggle with spelling and punctuation etc.

But what grates me the most is people who a) use "txt spk" or b) don't use punctuation or capitalisation because they either can't be bothered or just because they choose not to. For me personally it's a matter of pride and self-image, kind of the same way I wouldn't walk into work on a Monday morning with my shirt hanging out of my trousers and my shoes not polished.

Sam i couldn't agree more with text speak etc but as you say some people have dyslexia and/or other learning difficulties and to be fair no one on here knows who does and who doesn't so to tell them every little thing they have done wrong is a bit harsh imo.
