City fans scupper Bowyer transfer
Lee Bowyer has turned down the chance to resurrect his career at Birmingham City after some of the club's fans mounted a campaign against his transfer.
Bowyer, the Newcastle United midfielder, was given permission to seek a new club after his controversial on-pitch brawl with team-mate Kieron Dyer last season, but a furious David Sullivan, Birmingham's co-owner, revealed that the player had been put off by an internet petition.
Bowyer is waiting for a date to face Newcastle magistrates as a result of public order charges brought against him after punching Dyer during Newcastle's game with Aston Villa towards the end of last season.
Birmingham had been working for almost a month to land the midfielder, but after news that Newcastle had granted permission for Birmingham to open talks, a minority of fans made a protest on the internet.
Sullivan said: "We had agreed terms with Newcastle and had been given permission to talk to Lee, but a small minority of fans got a petition together to say that they don't want Lee Bowyer at the club or anywhere near Birmingham.
"So the player does not want to come where he is not welcome and he has indicated to his agent that it would be inappropriate for him to sign for Birmingham. It looks like we are going to lose out on a terrific player due to a small minority of fans and I am absolutely gutted. I can't describe how disappointed I feel. He would have been a fantastic addition to our squad.
"I believe in democracy, but if all clubs have a minority of fans saying they don't want Lee Bowyer, where does that leave him?"
Steve Bruce, the Birmingham manager, admitted he was "devastated" by the apparent collapse of the deal, adding: "I can't believe that something like this has cost us a really, really good player."

We should have done that to Mark Robinson when he punched Scott Leitch.

Whether or not this is true, but I heard on Sky Sports News via the writer of a Birmingham fanzine that the petition consisted of less than 250 names. Bearing in mind many of them are potentially from other clubs just wanting to stir up trouble, the media seem to have made a mountain out of a molehole and stupid Bowyer has fallen hook line and sinker.
Imagine if Swindon were a Premiership club with the resources of Birmingham. Would any sane fan say no to his signing? His talent is undeniable...

I don't want to see him in a Swindon shirt.
He is an absolute wanker and I would be ashamed for him to be associated with STFC!

But he would spend half the season suspended, fall out with players, row with Kingy and the board over contracts and be a general prick!
