Greer reveals catalyst behind south coast switch

GORDON Greer claims Town chairman Andrew Fitton’s refusal to speak to him about a new contract was instrumental in his switch to League One rivals Brighton.

Two things about this. We don't know if Greer gave a strong indication he wanted a long term contract on silly terms, a bit like Paynter. Which means the board have cashed on rather than lose out altogether.

Secondly, it seems we are seeing where we are with the squad prior to offering new deals. Whilst this makes it fair to all playerswe have lost a few we wanted to keep. The policy could prove to be quite brutal to our squad. But I shall wait until October before complaining as everyone we want to keep may sign up again.

I don't see why he couldn't  wait until October. It's only a few months away and he had little competition... and he was captain!

Fitton is obviously showing who's boss. If you don't like it theres the door.

I totally agree.  The chances for him to get an extended contract should be good and a little patience is all that he needed.  I am disappointed to see that reaction from such an experienced player.

thats how it reads. Fitton has also stated he does his contract dealings in October once the pre season etc has moved ut the way.

Clearly GG used the Brighton interest to push contract negotiations and maybe try and get a better deal. Fitton said wait till Oct, GG walked off in a huff so Fitton accepted the next bid and got rid.

we'll be all the better for it i reckon. Regardless of how good GG was DW has proved he can find the replacements needed to push us forward.

It's human nature: jam today or jam tomorrow.  Put yourself in Greer's shoes.  You know that you will not have too many more pay days in your present career and your boss has told you he will talk about a new employment contract in 3 months from now.  He does not tell you how long this contract will be, but 2 years is probably the most likely duration.

At the same time, you know that another employer will offer you a three year deal right now.  What are you going to do?  Unless you have balls of steel like chalkies_shorts, you take the certainty of the new deal with the rival employer.  In Greer's position, I would have done the same.

I think it's because he's acting like it's Fitton's fault and almost trying to create an "are you with him or with me scenario". Most sane town supporters will side with Fitton everytime. If he (GG) expected fans to get on his side, you couldn't do much worse than act as if it's Fitton's "fault".

I don't care how much he's tried to butter us up in that article and get on side. Fitton is king, not you GG.

Bollocks Greer you cunt. He knows damn well we were offering a contract and sulked off saying he wont discuss it at all if not now.

As captain he should know damn well that if we were to start actuall talks with him now and not others what that would do to team spirit.

Sorry Gord the old wedge driving 'make myself feel better for taking the money' spiel doesn't rub. Whatever happend i'm 100% behind Sir Fitton and the decision he's made as i'm sure nearly all town fans are. Enjoy you time at Brighton.  Bye

I like the fact we have a club who have a clear policy and are prepared to stick to it and don't succomb to players demands.

Well done Fitton IMO!

What GG did, is what top players do. They get informed from their agent that club x are after you.

You go to the chairman, saying that club x are after me, and would you like to give me an extended contract with a probable pay rise.

Club either pays up, or sells you as you're not interested in playing for the club anymore.
