Dave, to someone earning a wage that Greer probably does, with an early thirities retirement age with no guarantee of future employment, an "extra 500 quid a month or whatever" for a few years could make an enormous difference to his children.  Maybe he decided to put this ahead of his personal glory - this would make him more of a man, not less, in my eyes.

Until we know whether the club sold him because they wanted to, or because Greer wanted to go then its hard to make any judgement at all.

I'm disappointed because we lost a key member of our squad, our captain and our experienced defender to a rival in our own division for what seems like a cheap fee.

If we get someone in to replace him and it works out, then fair enough. If we get nobody in and are relying on LJF/Morrison then I'll remain disappointed (unless their performances prove me wrong!).

Whatever the reason is for him going doesn't really matter the fact that he has gone does and I think is very very disappointing ! Doesn't improve us for next season !!

On the money front I don't know why there is this persistently feeling sorry for footballers thinking because they have to find something else to do when they retire. During their careers they have lots of help and advice in planning for that time, and they do (compared to me) get paid well even at this level.

I reckon quarter of a million quid for a 30 year old league 1 centre back isn't that bad a bit of business-we could buy 2 Cuthberts for that!

Agree with that-they earn enough in their short careers to have a comfortale retirement, more than you or I earn in our whole working lives.FFS Paynter will have earned over a million pounds by the time he retires!

Spot on.  Greer leaves with my thanks, and a sincere hope that he doesn't come back to haunt us.  I'm 8 years older than he is, but my career in finance is likely to last at least another 25 years, while his as a footballer will probably last another 5.

Paul D's 'let's get out the pitchforks comments' made me laugh, because

(a) it was apt/witty; and
(b) I love the idea of a scouser gone native in Wiltshire.  Good work!

If the fee is actually £250k (I think it'll be more) then perhaps we've just been stalling over this whilst we were looking for a replacement.
