Is it the same bloke? His first name is spelt differently, though they are both taxi drivers.

Same guy. Consider this quote from him after the guy who assaulted him escaped prison:

In a statement read to the court, Mr Bird said following the incident he hadn’t wanted to work nights and “was still nervous and anxious’’. The bill for his dental work had totalled £194.

- Imagine how nervous and anxious the people of Cumbria have been today!!

Just a bit of background, alright?

Fair enough. It just seemed that you were implying there was a link between his alleged 'background' and todays events. I don't believe there is one.

My sister-in-law lives near where 2 people have been killed.  From seeing the news everyone knew at the time that this bloke was on the rampage and her village was deserted as people were locking themselves indoors until news came through that he had done himself in

I agree with you, but of some note all the same. Fascinating listening to peoples accounts on the news of this fellow. Not the typecast lone nut it would seem, a fairly agreeable fellow according to those who knew him. Strange motivations at play here.

Why not? Being the victim of a violent assault is traumatic and can very easily result in long term psychological effects - such as stress, anxiety, depression and so on. I'm not saying it would have caused it but it could have played a role.

People don't generally walk round shooting people, there's normally something that led up to and triggered it.

Of course. The trials and tribulations of contemporary life can lead to various outcomes. I was purely trying to negate a supposed link between a taxi driver being assaulted and the resultant slaying of innocent people. There is a lot more to it than that.

If you check back I never suggested a correlation between the two. Given the enormity of this event I thought it a worthwhile post, trying to grasp a little about this clearly unhinged man.

Brings back memories of Hungerford. Thank goodness this doesn't happen often in the UK
