I remember cycling around Eldene and Liden as a kid aged 7+ on my own or with mates.

I wouldn't let my kids do that whatsoever, probably down to irrational fears.

I used to as well round there and walk back from infant school on my own. The cycle paths round there made it nice and easy to get around.

Our 9 in august son wont be getting one any time soon either. Then again he isn't allowed off to play out   of sight either, unlike some of his classmates who seen to be alwlowed to roam from orchid vale up to woodhall park any time.

This is my point.  He's either out the front of the house playing or on the green where we can see him.  If not, he's in a friend's house or in the company of another adult. I raised a bit of a debate about it on fb earlier to which someone I know responded that both her boys of 9 and 7 have mobiles.  I did refrain from replying, 'Yes but your kids are allowed to roam the streets and go from Greenmeadow to Asda on their own'.

It is different now.  We used to play cat and mouse all round Greenmeadow and Seven Fields when I was young.  I was prob about 10/11/, but my brothers were younger.  There wasn't the over riding  fear of wierdos being around and kids being abducted etc then.

And could Seagate be any more anal about their returns packaging requirements?! They've sent me a fucking 20 page document about how to package the HDD. I can't even find an anti-static bag in my box of bits FFS.

I definitely am guilty of double standards with what I allow my kids to do and what I did. God knows why.

Perhaps back then things were safer, we had Jim 'll Fix it and Gary Glitter and...oh.

I'm more worried about his lack of awareness with roads and so on than the likelihood of being taken by a wierdo.

Abduction rates has pretty much remained constant year on year since the 60's, It's more the media instilling fear into people IMO, as most people have said I was allowed out playing football at around that age.

FWIW I got my first phone at year 8 christmas, so I would have been 12, however thats just as mobiles were becoming the norm for people.

I rememeber arranging with my first girlfriend at school what time I would text her!

Yep abduction rates may have remained the same...sadly muggins, and theft and general thuggery has increased no end.
I wouldn't want any of my kids or grandkids walking alone especially around town.
Sadly the justice system lets down the victims in petty crime down badly....my son when aged 15 was assaulted for no reason and threatened with a knife on a bus.,,,two different places.
The police did nothing on both occasions after taking the details.
