This is an area where we need better signage. Instead of number of yards until closed lane (unimportant), should instead have “use both lanes” sign all the way until the closure, then a “merge in turn” at the end. This would stop the get in early crew from thinking they are doing the right thing at least.

https://blog.greenflag.com/2019/the-zip-merging-debate/#:~:text=If%20you%27re%20in%20the,from%20the%20closing%20lane%20in. From personal experience, (it's clearly not an exact science, it depends on weather and traffic conditions etc) I tend to wait until around the 400/200 yards sign before attempting to merge. (if overtaking slower traffic) When the traffic is at a standstill, I generally try and follow the one driver in 'rule'. Part of the problem I always see is when traffic is gridlocked in these situations is people tend to adopt a 'i'm ok jack' attitude and spend as much effort as possible not to let any other cars in. Whilst it's often frustrating, I can't see how this aids traffic flow. I saw that Car Insurance costs are up 40%. I'm sure some of this is down to the downright awful state of driving on the roads these days.

Yeah true. Got my first ever puncture this year driving back from the train station. I didn't see a crater in the road in time and the driver side tyre was history.

The bit that I don't like is when I and everyone in front merge 200-400 yards from the obstruction and then the jokers behind go flying past up to the point of the blockage and merge there. That just results in everything in the lane I've merged in to stopping. Then, more jokers approaching quickly go speeding past on the outside and dive in at the front, barging in and leaving the rest of us stopped!

Same. And J17 heading out of Chippenham to go eastbound to Swindon.
While we're on the subject of poor driving, and the A350 up to J17, and trivial things I don't understand: often a lane gets shut during the day at the moment because of the roadworks and invariably a long queue will form from the 'lane closes in 800yds' sign. Why? The lane is closed in 800 yards, not now, use both lanes you morons!
I love nothing better than driving right to the front of the queue in the empty open lane and (politely) merging in, often much to the annoyance of people who've been queuing for over 10 minutes when it hasn't even impacted my journey time at all. Morons. All of them.
Actually, the idiots that try and police this by either stopping in the open lane or rolling along at the glacial pace of the traffic sitting in the queue fuck me right off. There's a special place in hell reserved for them.
I look forward to meeting you one day, so you can see what a c*nt I am! :-)

Yeah, you do see that a lot, and sadly I don't think that behaviour is going to change, more and more people these days seem to be desperate to be first, or ahead or whatever their mindset is.

Well this is where you're wrong. The lane doesn't close there, it closes in 200-400 yards. Moron.

Not sure it will help, the M40 junction for the A34 has a sign that says use all 3 lanes for Oxford, yet people still block lane 1 indicating to move into lane 2 on the slip road.

I remember getting off the M4 junction 17 and heading to Chippenham many moons ago. There were roadworks warning signs on the dual carriageway, roadworks in 1 mile. I wanted to turn right to Kingston St Michael which was approx 3/4 of a mile ahead. As I zoomed past the mile long tailback, seemingly the only car doing so it dawned on me the lane closure was about 20 yards before the KSM turning. Indicator of shame. Could feel the daggers

Fuck ‘em, do what i do, straddle the lanes, they can see the signs the same as everyone else. Make them wait the same as everyone else, wether I’m driving a lorry or a car I won’t back down. Wankers.

This is one of the reasons we have long queues at the approaches to lane closures. If drivers stay in their lanes until the closures and then behave civily, merging one at a time, the tailbacks would be shorter and the urge to behave like "wankers" by driving down the empty lane until reaching the tail of their queue would be reduced.

It's not "being a wanker" though, it's using the road correctly. It's the wankers that straddle both lanes or refuse to let you merge who are the un-civil ones.
