I'm sure if everyone put their prices up during Ramadan* there would be outrage  Grin

*other religious holidays are also available
Ramadan's not a holiday, it's a period of fasting. But I do remember reading the cost of flights/accommodation to Saudi goes through the roof during the hajj if that makes you any happier

The economics of the travel industry are such that everyone wants to sun bath etc in the summer. A business has costs that run for 12 months not just 4 or 5, therein lies the nub. That's when they make their money it's called supply and demand....

or the 80/20 rule. 80% of a companies business comes from 20% of their customers. I'm not defending or castigating anyone or any industry, they're the general facts.

The government, any government cannot dictate to the free market, maybe manipulate certain things but then the companies piss offshore or to another country. Maybe the answer lies in the case we're discussing with giving LEA's the freedom to completely turn the school year on its head, however think of the carnage that would cause.....

Yes they did. 5 days before Christmas, with 10 days notice. Which did not reduce the inconvenience

Send them an invoice. then if they fail to pay take them to the small claims court....

I can't even contemplate why you'd do such a thing. My sideburns are as much part of my face as my nose.

I don't understand how my little boy, at 8 months old, can produce such foul smelling crap from his arse.

I wouldn't expect it to smell of roses at the best of times, of course, but Jesus fucking Christ on a bike with a basket this shite smells beyond reason. I swear that some of it must be as yet unknown to science.

Exactly. That would feel like face-rape. Mine are a small rock 'n' roll gesture in a life of moderate conformity.

Doesn't really generally reduce inconvenience though. A day off is a day off. Its useful if you are going away anyway though.

This one is even more incomprehensible: Most of my sons primary school is moving in to a new school building after half term. So guess what, two extra days tacked on to half term break so the teachers can do the move in those two days. Mind boggling.

Why is it incomprehensible?  The teachers can't possibly do the job for which they are paid, if they've got to do a job for which they are not paid, and in many cases not physically able to do.  Of course, if the LEA, or academy status provider, paid for contractors to do the humping in the hols then there'd be no problem....but they won't. I daresay the shift will take longer than 2 days, so said teachers will be hard at it in their hols.

Disclaimer...the reference to humping and being hard at it are purely coincidental, and are not intended as a slight on Michael Gove's favourite people.

Damn Samdy, sorry to hear that. You're right, that's probably best. We others of the sideburn fraternity shall mourn your loss.

It's just my beard at the moment. I'm hoping it doesn't spread to the scalp but there's no telling if it will.

If/when it finally grows back I reckon I'm going to grow a full beard.

I have to take my holidays during school breaks as the mrs works in a school and my daughter is still at school too. Definitely a pain in the arse where the holiday companies crank up the cost as they know people will pay it.
I aint been abroad for years(apart from to Ireland) and i don't miss it. You can have as good a time here for whatever budget you have if you shop about or buy a caravan like i did.

We get the letters/emails from both the kids' schools lecturing us about how they will crack down on taking kids out of school for holidays, as there is "ample time afforded" to go during school holidays etc. Which I agree with, but the hectoring tone and lack of any application of common sense flexibility gets right up my nose. Especially when the same does not seem to apply for Teacher Training days - I had to take an extra day off work at the start of this week because my eldest's school had an "Inset Day". That's on top of the "Collapsed timetable" they had on the last Friday before Christmas with a week and a half's notice (aka "We're all going to the pub at lunchtime so you can fork out for childcare because you've still got to work").

Every time they do this, it costs us, either indirectly because we have to take time off, or directly in the form of having to pay for childcare. So why can't they have those days during the "ample time afforded" in the school holidays? It cuts both ways and schools used to be allowed to apply a degree of common sense on a case by case basis, sadly that's now been taken away from them, there seems to be very little flexibility for parents any more, but we are expected to routinely take time off work or shell out for expensive childcare. That's what pisses me off.

Simple solution... take the kids out of school, send them to work and voila no fines and extra money to pay for the holiday.

Seriously though we haven't been through this yet as our little lass is only 10 months, but how do they prove it, does little Johnny have to provide a doctors certificate if he is off for a day or so?
