As a sports fan you have a list of ready made passwords: WesleyFoderingham01 NathanThompson02 NathanByrne03 etc If Swindon have a 24 man squad for a season you can change your password every 2 weeks and still have enough for a whole year. PS: Pa55w0rd is a MUCH worse password than bookfredpoolhigh. An automated brute force attack would get the first one in a couple of hours, the second would take a week or more. IE: it is better to have a long password that is really simple than it is to have a short one with obvious number/letter replacements. |

I've taken to using KeePass password manager. I don't trust websites to keep my passwords secure any more, so different complex passwords for each site I'm registered to are a must.

Thx for the tip but my main problem is the different rules sites impose so you can't use the same system everywhere. I have a stock of passwords I generally use, but some sites require a mix of upper- and lower-case and figures or a minimum of eight characters, and some only allow you three goes before locking you out. Let's have genetic recognition like in Gattaca and be done with the whole sorry medieval process.

Ouch. What is the actual problem with it, does it spin up and just not recognise anything or is it a FAT error that you can see the drive but nothing on it? or is it bricked? |

First I couldn't see it on Finder, only in disk utility. Disk utility said it couldn't repair it. Restarted and it appeared, and said I could copy the data but not write to it. Tried to copy stuff off it but it wasn't having any of it. Downloaded some programs and tried to scan it but it got to about half way and then slowed down to a ridiculous pace. Then disk utility seemed to think it was all okay. Now disk utility seems to think it's alright and is verifying, after which it'll probably suggest I press the repair button, and then will start doing that but get stuck about half way. It definitely spins. |

Are permissions correct do you know? If it's spinning and can be read, something might have happened to mess the permissions hence cannot be written to. What's the message when you try to copy to it? |

I would say you need a program that can read the raw data from the drive ignoring the errors it finds, a raw dump, there are programs out there for free that can give you a raw dump but they are not massively reliable. Basically the program ignores any indicators to files in the file allocation table and just gives you the data with file starts and ends and then decides for you what it thinks the file is, sometimes perfectly well. It sounds like a corruption in the disk control unit or FAT which means that raw reading of it could be successful.
