The general view seems to be that he did ok, is better than what they have now (Chris Turner is Director of Sport WTF??) but that he was just looking at Hartlepool as a stepping stone and didn't have any kind of rapport with the fans. There is also a suggestion that he engineered his own departure because there was a job 'waiting for him'. Stranger things have happened.

I personally would have to agree with the original poster who is a Town fan and say that he is the best manager we have had in 20 years. The best in my opinion, since Macari, but playing a much, much better style of football. I haven't forgotten Ardiles and Hoddle, I just think Wilson is a better all round manager.

Wilson better than Ardiles and Hoddle?  Can''t agree there, these two got us into the top flight.

Danny is doing a fine job, couldn't be going better reaally , and has us on the brink of a playoff and instils confidence whenever he talks. But we aren't there yet let alone promoted.

Didn't expect too many to agree with that and maybe I should have waited for him to get us promotion before making that statement. I just think that when you look at all the 'ingredients' a good manager needs (in my opinon at least) tactical nouse, motivational ability, being a good judge of a player, man management and ability to handle the media, I think DW has all of those attributes. I don't think all of those can necessarily be applied to Ardiles and Hoddle. Most perhaps, but not all.

You have to take into account other factors though, such as the financial position of the club and the place the team was when the manager arrived. I'm too young to remember anything before McMahon so can't really comment!

D.W. fits in well with the professionalism instilled into the club by the current board.  He goes about his business in an entirely professional manner, and has the full confidence of the fans.  Best Manager in the last twenty years, time will tell, but he does personify what Swindon Town is now all about.  Hopefully, he will help provide the stability that has missing for a long time, and will be at the helm for many years to come.  He certainly is up there with Paul Sturrock in terms of rapport with the fans.  When he became available after leaving Hartlepool, I would have been very surprised if he hadn't become Swindon's manager, he was the most obvious choice.

I wouldn't  disagree with that, the major reason being that the board and management operate as a team.

I'm not arguing one way or the other, but I would say that Ardiles and Hoddle had the nucleus of a very, very good side. They both benefitted substantially from the incredibly solid foundation that Macari had put in place. Ardiles introduced a much 'prettier style', which Hoddle was able to take advantage of. Hoddle himself made the difference on the park.

Wilson inherited a pretty poor squad. He has got rid of the chaff and got the best out of the rest - Putting George Wood and Peter Shirtliff in place have helped significantly there. He has made a couple of good signings, but is very reliant on loan players.

Looking at their careers: Ardiles showed that he couldn't really cut it as a manager in England. His style of play just wasn't effective in this country at that time. Hoddle showed that he could manage a good team but couldn't build from a poor one. Chelsea had a pretty decent side that he took over, Spurs never achieved much, but he went on to manage England. From there he did bugger all at Wolves. Macari was really a lower division manager. His style of play wasn't appreciated by some and his fitness principle and toughness not appreciated by players. He was fantastic for us but not for West Ham nor Celtic. Wilson has built several difficult to beat sides. He's done it at several clubs Sheff Wed, Brizzle Shitty & Hartlepool. Then there is the Macari-like job he did at Barnsley.

I reckon Wilson is the best manager we've had at the CG over the last 25 years. Macari, Ardiles and Hoddle all came here as player manager and even when they stopped playing they still managed in the style of an ex-player rather than as a manager, if that makes sense. I'm not saying we've got the best team or play the best football under Wilson, but if we're judging things solely on being a manager then I'd put him first.

I just hope we can hold on to Wilson as I reckon he's got another promotion to the Premier League in him still. He has built a team that is challenging for promotion this season, against all the odds, so why not in the Championship as well? Given the quality of players he's managed to bring in with us in League One, what will he be capable of if we were in the Championship?
