I know some people on here don't particulary like dogs, and that's fine. It just means that you're not to be trusted. I also know that some people on here think that dogs are great and view their pets as part of the family. I fall into the latter category.
Yesterday I had to have my dog put to sleep. He was old and his hips were knackered and he started to collapse on his back legs, so I really had no option.
I'm not telling you this because I want sympathy or owt. It's more therapeutic. I honestly didn't realise how sad it would make me feel.
From the very first time I took him for a walk and he ran up to a student sat reading a book and pissed on them, I knew he was the dog for me.
I loved the way he would chase things that he hadn't a hope in hell of catching. Trains, planes, he'd never give up. I loved that once when I got very drunk and was sick on him, he didn't get stressed, he started to lick the sick off. The sight of which made me sick out of my nose.
Anyway, he's now in that big park in the sky (for the atheists amongst us, that's the skip behind the vets*) and I'll miss him enormously.
*Not really, we've arranged for him to be cremated and we'll sprinkle his ashes on one of his favourite walking places.

Awww, so sad I've never had a dog, but the last time I cried was about 12 years ago when my cat died. I have two cats and dread the day they go, even though they're only 4. I imagine it's worse with dogs because more of a bond is created. Dogs love you no matter what and are always pleased to see you, cats don't give a shit about you unless they're hungry.

I had to get my dog put down late last year and it was one of the worst times I've ever had.

Sorry to hear about your dog spaceman. When our dogs die i swear they are the worst experiences we have. My dog was put down about 4 years ago now, and i still dream of her and think about her every few weeks. I don't think it ever leaves you. It just completely shatters your heart.

I've got all this to come, my Springer Spaniel Millie is coming up to 14 next month.
She has arthritis in her back legs and can no longer get up the stairs, she has cushing dieses and a couple of months back had a stroke.
Her eyesight and hearing arent what they used to be.
She's on a shitload of tablets - some times she is like the old dog that is and just sleeps and does bugger all - other days she lively like she was 5 years younger.
