Off sick today, so time to do a list.

What are the best cover versions that you have in your record collection? Versions that either added a new slant on the original, or faithful replicas.

The top ten from the cd rack next to my pc:

Pogues - Dirty Old Town (orig Ewan McColl)
Soft Cell - Tainted Love (orig Gloria Jones)
Hendrix - All along the watchtower (orig Bob Dylan)
The White Stripes - I just don't know what to do with myself  (orig Tommy Hunt?)
Aretha Franklin - Respect (orig Otis Redding)
Bjork - Oh So Quiet (orig betty Hutton - called "Blow a fuse")
The Beatles - Twist and Shout (orig The Top Notes)
Creedence Clearwater Revival (orig Dale Hawkins)
Robert Wyatt - Shipbuilding (orig Elvis Costello)
The Communards - Don't leave me this way (orig Howard Melvin and the Blue Notes)
The Specials - A message to you Rudy (orig Dandy Livingstone)
Four Men and a Dog - Waltzings for Dreamers (orig Richard Thompson)

Anthony and the johnsons cover of knocking on heavens door is possibly the most chilling song of all time, and undoubtedly the best cover EVER

Anything and everything by Nouvelle Vague, who only do covers. They rock. If you haven't heard of them they are well worth checking out, chances are you've already heard one of their covers as they get used a lot in films and tv.
