Ize is the Oxford spelling but ise is a lot more common in publishing here. That blog is not really accurate, organise isn't incorrect, they are both technically correct but I think organise is more phonetic anyway and Cameroniser looks a lot better.

Both are now acceptable English usages, but the split started as US v English usages, not OED v publishing. Which would be bizarre, frankly. -ize is probably more common now thanks to everyone using bloody spell checkers instead of knowing how to spell

I didn't say the spilt started as OED v publishing but there is a split. OED have always used -ize and most newspapers, magazines, the Cambridge University Press and the BBC use -ise. -ise is still more common in the UK but some publishers use -ize because they use the OED for all their spellings. It didn't start with US V English usages, -ise is from French and -ize is from Greek. OED and the early American dictionaries chose the Greek spelling.

I used to work as a copy editor and one of the first things when working on any new publication was to establish style rules on things like this and this was how it was always explained to us, so we always referred to it as American ize vs English ise. Had I realised the French were involved in this way, I'd have taken a very different view. Cheers, BWB, yet again the TEF proves to be an education!

You in publishing then Ben? You're very well informed. I know OUP's lexicographers would say that modern Oxford dictionaries only intend to describe the language, rather than prescribing it. http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/faq/aboutspelling/ize?view=ukFor instance, they would happily join in a rendition of Vampire Weekend's "Who Gives a Fuck about the Oxford Comma?" http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/faq/aboutother/oxfordcomma?view=uk
