I went and watched the Wildcats about a month ago, and trying to understand it is pretty futile. Like most American sports it reminds me of that episode of Friends, where Joey is in his flat rehearsing for hosting an unbelievably complex game show called bamboozled about wicked wango cards or something.

It was Basingstoke, i think. They had the rather intimidating nickname of "Wolfies"? I just found the whole thing a little bit, "what's going on now?" Rather embarrassingly i used to play as well. The only thing i kinda knew was Powerplay and had a vague recollection of icing, although only as a word, not as an actual rule. I suppose once you get your head around the constant stopping and starting along with the constant player changing, it's just a case of get the puck in the net.

'Wolfies' is basingstoke bison's main sponsor, its an established american sports bar (apparently) who have taken over the bar at their ice rink, its the first Wolfies in the country I think.
I enjoy ice hockey an awful lot more than I do football now.

I've been watching bits of ice hockey now I get about 100 live games a day on ESPN.
I'm amazed by how fighting is part and parcel of the game. Whilst its not actively encouraged they don't do much to stop it and have rules in place to govern the fights. They even keep stats on the number of fights each player gets involved in along with specialist tough guys to do the fighting.

Although fighting is illegal, the referees cannot interfere until one fighter gains a significant advantage, or the fight dwindles down into a bear hug. It carries a 5 minute penalty, and can also carry an extra 2 minute 'instigator' penalty for one of the fighters.
However in swindon's league, fighting carries a 2+2minute penalty, officially for roughing.

Fighting is the best bit. I remember Ryan Aldridge getting the crap beaten out of him once, back in the Chill days. Very amusing listening to his (?) mum cries of "come on Ryan" go quite.
Other hockey fighting taboos - 3rd man in, and also laying a hand on the black and white.
Went to watch the Wildcats for the first time in ages a few weeks ago, against Guidlford flames. I guess its the financials, but the standard seemed way down from when I went more regularly. Nice to see them doing cheap ticket promotions through the local schools though, that's why we went. ------
American sports are fine even if they do play derivatives of women sports.
Ice Hockey - Bloke field hockey. Baseball - Bloke rounders. US Football - like rugby but more girly Basketball - bloke netball.
