Food and energy etc should be tax exempt- they are essential items in my opinion. PS3s aren't

Why should people who earn more pay a higher proportion of tax anyway? It's not their fault they are better off

Because they've benefited from society more than everybody else? They're still better off than everybody else, but they should give more back. Ten grand to someone who is earning £100,000 + a year isn't going to improve their lives very much, but will massively improve the lives of people earning minimum wage.

I think it comes down to the government needing a certain amount which if they charged to all, would put low income individuals at a disadvantage. Lots of people of higher earnings work hard to get there and dont take much from the state. Then you get people who take and never give back. People from backgrounds which aren't bad at all

So you're saying those on low incomes should pay a higher proportion of tax than those on high incomes? Because that is what is happening at the moment. How is that fair?

And I'm saying why should people who earn less pay a higher proportion. I'm happy to settle for everyone paying a similar proportion of their income in taxes. But as I said, at present that isn't what happens, its the poor that get shafted.

Yeah what DRS said. Dont see why its fair to tax people who earn more a higher amount just because they can afford it. At the same time I realise it has to be like that because low earners cant afford to pay more in tax.

and from a purely selfish perspective, it's better for me if I get to pay less tax than someone who earns more.

Because as I said, they benefit the most out of it. I'm sure there are high earners out there who just earn money off other high earners, but it breaks down and they wouldn't be earning money if it for other people having it to spend. Just because you're earning enough not to directly need benefits, education, the nhs, police, etc. doesn't mean that you aren't benefiting from it. In fact you're benefiting from it the most.

i think everybody should pay the same % of their wage in tax, regardless of what they earn. if the government stopped wasting so much of it, and handing it out to those not deserving of it, we wouldn't have to pay as much as we do. those at the top and bottom of society take the piss out of the common folk

What a bunch of whinging cunts.
Tax is a pain in the arse, but the standard of living for the vast majority of people is very high.
Cars, Sky telly, holidays, decent housing, etc, etc.
Ok, some people work harder than others, or are more able to improve their lot due to their intelligence (Or their parents) but the % of people who are homeless, or starving to death, in this country is much lower than most (Including the good ol' US of A)
Why is that? Maybe it's something to do with how our society's structured?
Stop fucking moaning about how bad you've got it, think about people in real need for 5 minutes then complain about how harsh it is in the UK.

Never a truer word said. I have no objection to tax but, I do object to the bastards that have never done aproper days work in their lifes (MP's) wasting it. The whole system is a bloody mess. raising tax is so inefficient. As an example why do we pay National Insurance AND income tax. Why pay car tax AND fuel tax. The tax system is so complicated that the Goverment employ a small army to collect it & the people employ loads of accountants to interpret it. Then they waste it. I always believed that the benefit system was a safety net. To help those who need it when they need it. Council tax is another rip off. The only decent service that I appreciate from my council is the dustbins being emptied. I believe that the cost of that is less than £100. Our taxes fund an Army of bureaucrats whose main purpose in their job is to justify their existence & spend their budget so they get the same again next year. It takes another small army to administer the benefits system, which is so complicated that few understand it fully (Some claimants are the most knowledgeable!) . One of the biggest cons is the movement of thousands from the job seekers allowance to incapacity benefit.
