Or more specificallt felipe massa. In an accident worryingly identical to that of henry surtees in the week, massa got hit by some debris (a piece of barrichelo suspension), and plundered head first into the tyre wall. He did seem to appear to apply the brakes, but crashed at some speed. Ferrar originally said he was fine, but turns out he has cut on his forehead, bone damage to his skull and a brain concussion. Clicky below for a photo. Beware, its a bit gruesome http://www.vg.no/uploaded/image/bilderigg/2009/07/25/1248529885121_888.jpgHe has to have surgery now, so definatley out of the race tomorrow, perhaps even F1 forever, which would be a pity. Very erratic as a driver, but still came within one corner of winning the title last year. On to tommorows race, alonso on pole, the two red bulls second and third (i think), and hamilton fourth. Button down in 8th. Its looking more and more unlikely brawn will win either title this season, Red Bull look unstoppable. A good start for hamilton tomorrow, with his KERS of the startline, and i reckon we could see him victorious.

Always sad when there's injuries in the sport, hopefully he will be back this season.

Successful operation apparently. Though in intensive care under observation for obvious reasons. Can't see him being back this season, that's even assuming his eye still has 100% vision. Picture here of Massa after accident. Not too blood and gore, but the damage to the helmet and his head is pretty sobering I guess 800g of metal hitting you at god knows what speed is going to do damage. http://sport.orf.at/090725-16997/formel_pop_massa_unfall_gesicht_b_a.jpgThe race itself I can't see past Red Bulls. I don't think McLaren are quite there yet but maybe a shot at 3rd. Button has a bit more fuel on board than those in front but surely not enough to get the places back given his current position. Alonso is very light.

I think that means life threatening as in he's just had head surgery and that in itself can be life threatening if complications arise. That's James Allens take anyway http://twitter.com/jamesallenonf1ignore reports on Sky/AP that Massa is in life threatening condition. He's stable after an op and will be okay. Long recuperation though

And the media like to hype things up as well. I'm likely to believe James Allen's comments more.
Wishing Felipe all the best in his recovery.

This whole episode does bring into doubt the whole 'mid season testing' rule. Would a properly tested brawn be shedding bits of suspension for no reason at all?

Totally freak accident. Really hope he is able to drive in F1 again. I think that's the first time this season that we've seen something dodgy from a Brawn car as well.

No motor sport is 100% safe and the drivers know this when they get into the cars. This is why they are payed very well.I think the thing people should be saying is how most of the saety features worked.
How heavy is a spring,1lb maybe, how fast was he traveling 150mph maybe thats a lot of force hitting your head.
Hes done well to be around long enough to have a operation. Get well soon.

Well driven Lewis. Didn't think the McLaren was quite there yet, but it quite clearly was. On this track at least.

He'll do Jenson a few favours over the next few races I think.

What a horrible incident that was.
I don't think that we'll see Massa in an F1 car again.
Nose to tail racing is a large part of the sport, especially now that there is no over-taking, and I wouldn't blame him if he doesn't fancy that anymore.
Shame because he was a nice bloke too.
