At least he was deemed worthy of a song. Something to tell the grandchildren of one day, perhaps.

Not really an ex player as such but Tyrone Mings, rejected by Swindon for not being big enough while a youngster gets a transfer to Aston Villa for £26m.
Definately one we missed out on.

Anything to back that up? Was under the impression (rightly or wrongly) he was at Southampton from an early age. The fact he was playing just down the road in Chippenham means he really should have been on our radar but certainly don’t remember him ever being here. That’s not to say that he wasn’t of course. Just wondering if it’s just an urban myth because he’s local...

https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/tyrone-mings-aston-villa-transfers-15708361Mings spent eight years at St Mary’s before being released in 2009 with talk of cut budgets and - incredibly given his stature now, a ‘lack of physical development’.
He had trials with Bristol Rovers, Swindon Town, Cardiff City and Portsmouth, but no-one took the chance and he ended up on a football scholarship at Millfield School where he had trials for England Under 18s.
At 17 he trained with Chippenham Town, who were managed by his father, but ended up at Yate Town, who were playing in the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South & West, three tiers below the Conference.

According to this piece from a few years back, he was at Southampton from 8-16 when he was released for being too small. Then had unsuccessful trials with us and Rovers among others before doing a sixth form football scholarship course, then played for Chippenham etc etc. So I think that trial's the closest we came https://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/dec/18/tyrone-mings-ipswich
