Just stumbled accross this on sky - vote for your all time greatest player

I suspect our votes would go to Don Rogers, although he was before my time so I'd personally go for Shaun Taylor from the era I've been a supporter

I'd have to go with someone I saw play, which covers the last 20 years. For me it has to be Fjortoft, with Taylor coming a close second - defenders never do too well in votes like this, everyone remembers the goals more.

That was the thing with Ooh Shaun though. He could score vital goals comiing up for corners. I may be wrong but didn't he score 10 or so most seasons

Sure he scored goals, but none had the flair of some of Fjortoft's strikes. Plus he didn't have a signature move like Fjortoft's airplane, which again is the stuff i remember better.

'95/'96 - 7
'94/'95 - 4
'93/'94 - 4
'92/'93 - 13
'91/'92 - 5

(Goals - all comps).

Good, but I thought it was better than that (93//93 aside). Still a legend though.

He couldn't defend agains decent players once we were in the Prem though could he.

Calderwood was twice as good as a defender, which is why he played for 3 or 4 Prem sides and got international  caps and OST signed for Shitty

OST had to put up with some right shambles of CB partners in the Prem though and Buzzer was never the best defender so that left him and Bodin holding off the likes of Shearer, Cole, Mark Hughes, Cantona etc on their own.

Kilkline and Fenwick were pretty poor and Whitbread looked OKish.  Would have been nice to have had CC and Hoddle in the squad that season - Hoddle and Fjortoft in the same team would have been wicked, we'd still have gone down but it would have been more of a showing.

Oh for the days when Fergie said our midfield controlled the game at OT...

Thats all very true KT.

Having a succession of complete strangers in goal throughout most of the season probably didn't help much either.

But it's still the case that the season in which our defence was a complete fucking shambles and we conceded a ton was the high point of Shaun's career.

My favourite player...... it's a toss up between Kamara and Moncur, both of whom proved they had it in them to play in the top flight elsewhere.

I can still remember Craig Brown arguing that Moncy should be in the England team.

Maybe he could have been if he'd been less of a pissed up fanny chaser. Apparently he's a bit of a god botherer now. Strange.

Kammy was a bit early for me to remember properly, I remember seeing him play a few times but nothing specific - he looked immense in the legends game though.

Moncur was a great player for us, I used to love sticking the collar up as a youngster and telling people to get stuffed who asked if i was 'being cantona'...

Is true, we did concede the ton and a lot of those goals will have been the easiest some of the scorers ever got in their careers which you can only blame the back 5 for I suppose, poor old Jon Sheffield eh?

I wouldn't change that season for anything though, think the biggest regret for me was that we didn't hold on for the win at Anfield, the beatings I would have got at school for it would have been so worth it.

To answer the initial question though I think I'll have to say Jan for me, in my memory he's head and shoulders above any player I've seen in a Swindon shirt, I find it hard to really remember players before that era - there is Hoddle of course but he was already a huge talent when he came, the way Jan had to go through the terrible form and nearly being loaned back to Norway before becoming one of the best strikers in the league in an instant was brilliant.

I hope in another 16 years we can maybe talk of someone rivaling his talent at the club.  As good as he is it would be a shame if 30 year olds 16 years from now describe Cox as the best player they've seen at Swindon.

Fjortoft without a shaddow of doubt - immense!

I recall he scored the week his baby girl was born and kept scoring cos he thought it was her making him do it.

i noted this thread the other day and really had to think about this one.
kamara was my first real stfc hero.tough tackling midfield general, and he certainly stood out to me as a kid.
the greatest player i've seen has to be calderwood though.was never a spectacular player but did the job week in week out,and lead us from the basement division to the prem as skipper.the only black mark against him is that he never played for us in the top flight.(not that i blame him for moving)
i'd pick duncan shearer over fjiortoft.but the pair of them were fine players for us.
and taylor was a gladiator for us who gave everything, but wasn't the player calderwood was.

looking at our players of the last 10 or so years is really depressing, apart from parkin and cox in comparison to what we had then are utter shite.players like peacock are now town heros for fucks sake nowadays.
i was spoilt in my youth watching town, as we had fine players, and were one of the best sides outside the  top flight.

We've had some great players, but no-one with the ability to change the game , or win the game , single handed like the Don.

It can only be Don Rogers.

(the only name I would put close to him would be Hoddle)

I pretty much agree totally Arriba, Kammy wa smy first hero at the club, along with Mayes and Rowlands but Kammy made it all tick in Central Midfield, he would make it into any of my Swindon all time fave teams.

The only one I am not so sure about is Shearer over Fjortoft, the difference between them for me was that Fjortoft was a tougher harder player with a bit more pace than Shearer but both would grace any Town side now...classy players.

There is no Town player at the moment with the possible exception of Cox who COULD ever, even with many years service to the club, get anywhere near an all time great Town side IMO.

Rogers was amazing...didnt see him at his best but even so his relaxed style of play was brilliant..nothing fazed him....one player who could of and maybe should have played for England was Paul Rideout...he had everything except pace, saw him at Luton once aged 17 and he took the mik...scored on his debut but you could argue that he didnt really play enough for us.....David Moss was a superb winger and i was suprised no one baught him from Luton...weve had some great attacking defenders like Taylor and Calderwood,Gittens had everything except temperment...Ian Rush in his autobiagraphy said he hated playing against Gittens,Foley was under rated and benefited from playing in attacking teams but oh for a midfielder like him in our team today...so for me Rogers would be in my team....another season from Cox would be nice just to see if he continues in the same vain......for 100% commitment positioning and temperament John Trolloppe would be in my team also.

Best I've seen for Swindon are Hoddle and Fjortoft, I'll vote for Fjortoft.
