I was listening to Radio 5 the other day and they were talking about Ronaldo's shooting technique. They reckoned (especially with free kicks) that he kicks the ball higher up so that he is kicking it down in to the ground a bit, which helps him to get the ball to dip more. Apparently he always kicks the valve as well, for more swerve and power - a tactic shared with a lot of Brazilians. According to them on the radio anyway.

For me, the light balls make a mockery of football. When Roberto Carlos made the ball swing one way then the other at 'Le Tornoi' in 1997 it was his skill. Kicking the valve is just hoping to gain an advantage from a deforming ball because it is not strong enough to take the force of the kick. |

But then a lot of the comments are also complete and utter bollocks. Most of those goals are power shots, a dribbling run or a volley. Not sure any of them can compete with Cox's, due to the way he ran on to a ball coming from behind and managed to control it like that. The volley shot wasn't that special, all about the first touch for me. |

It's the speed in which he brings the ball down and shoots which made it so special. Not only was he latching onto the pass but he obviously had to see Ince off his line and have it in his head to shoot. A more speculative effort would have been a first time attempt. Brilliant.

The best thing about Coxy's goal is the instant control, and then he hits it on the volley without breaking stride. Top class.

When I watched it live, I though Coxy had just hit it on the half-volley, but when you saw it on TV, and he actually controlled it and then hit it on the volley, the goal is 100 times better. |
