I know a great place you could go on Salisbury Plain. Its a bunker which you can stand inside while the army launch 155mm shells at. I'll reserve you a spot on the patio, so you can enjoy the sunshine......

Yep, the windmill was in a state of total disrepair and hidden between a electricity sub station and a housing estate - so the local parish council sold it and the proceeds went towards some nice new tennis courts for village..... I'm an ex-'chissy weirdo' don't you know...

I loves Wiltshire me.....a good way of sampling some of the more hidden bits, is to pedal The Wiltshire Cycleway. I think the route has been tinkered with a bit since I last did it....Wilts CC got a strop on when Swindon went unitary and dropped our bit.
The original route was about 170 miles, so an overnight stop if pushing it, or two if a more leisurely pace required. It manages to avoid all main roads and more or less tracks around the edge of the county...apart from the far north around Cricklade.
The advantage of doing the original route, was that it was signed so no need to keep checking maps..whoever worked the route did a fine job.
